Wyke Sixth Form College

Equality and Diversity

Policy

Wyke Sixth Form College is committed to equality of opportunity for staff and students. All individuals will be treated in a fair and equitable manner recognising any special requirements and making adjustments where feasible.

The aim is to create an atmosphere of mutual respect. All students are encouraged to embrace this policy, and actively seek to promote respectful relationships within Wyke. Any form of discrimination, inequality, victimisation, harassment or bullying will be taken very seriously.

The College has a Single Equality Scheme in place and progress on the associated action plan is reviewed annually. For further information on the actions within the plan please contact personnel@wyke.ac.uk. Equality Impact Assessments are conducted for all College and Corporation policies as they are reviewed to ensure consideration is given to how they may affect individuals from specific groups. If any potential issues are identified they are further explored and appropriate action is taken to address them.

Equality Act

Information regarding the new Equality Act, including the Public Sector Equality Duty, has been communicated to staff through a series of briefings being cascaded through the organisation. Formal training on equality and diversity has also been delivered to staff to increase their awareness and understanding of these issues.

Complaining

If a student feels that they have been the victim of discrimination by any member of the College – staff or student - they should pursue the matter by talking, in the first instance, with their Tutor. If a complaint needs to be made, this can be done through the guidance desk, or direct to the Vice Principal (Staff and Students), Mike Rogerson, who has responsibility for these issues within the College. You could also speak to a member of the executive of the student association.

Consultation and involvement

There is a group, the Opportunities Group, which comprises both students and staff, and which meets regularly to consider equal opportunities issues. You can make contact with this group or access the meeting notes, through the student executive or via the Vice Principal (Staff and Students).

Focus group meetings are also held regularly with groups of students, to see the details of the responses from last academic year to the question relating to equality please click here.

Objectives

Following the gathering of student views on areas for improvement in relation to equality and diversity within college, it has been agreed that the College's first overall equality objective will be to increase the promotion of other cultures with a view to raising student awareness.Student outcome data and data on staff characteristics has also been considered in identifying the key equality objectives. A second object has been agreed as being to improve the gender balance of the management team of the College with a particular focus on the Senior Management Team.
