Is this as high as it can get?
19 August 2010
In 2009, 99% of students taking A levels at Wyke passed. Surely that would never be equalled?
2010 students have risen to the challenge! 967 examinations taken, 964 passes. That's a 99.7% pass rate - an astonishing achievement. In 32 A level subjects and in the ICT National Diploma course we achieved a 100% pass.
The percentage achieving high grades of A or B is 41.5% - in line with the previous year. 84.1% of examinations at AS, which students take at the end of their first year of study, were passed. (2009: 87%).
Principal, Richard Smith, said, “I am delighted! What a set of achievements! It is great to see the just rewards for so much hard work, determination and enthusiasm. We never willingly let anyone do anything other than their best…and then staff ask a bit more!
“These results are about learning. They are also an indication of how seriously students take themselves and their futures. They know that achieving the best they can is an expression of how much respect and credit they give to their abilities and potential.
The outcomes are a result of making good choices, too. At a large sixth form college like Wyke – where the numbers taking A level are up by another 18% this year - students are always able to choose the right subjects for them. That makes a significant difference. Add to that the excellent guidance they receive from all our academic, tutorial and advisory staff and we have a sure-fire recipe for their success. What they need to add is their talent and determination. ”
Mr John Wilson, Chair of the Wyke Sixth Form College Corporation, added: “My sincere congratulations to all the students and to all the staff. This is a really remarkable achievement. I can’t praise too highly the dedication and hard work that everyone at Wyke puts in to achieve such astonishing success.”
This is the first year of the A* grade at A level. 25 students achieved A* grades and 5 of these achieved 2 A* grades each. Dr Smith commented: “These are serious achievements. My congratulations to all these students, who have shown dedication and commitment to match their talents. To get an A*, you need to achieve in the very highest bands of marks in every element of your course.”
