Oxbridge Learning Day 2012
13 February 2012
Wyke hosted a Learning Day on Friday, 17th February for the most academically gifted students in the Humber region. Academics and students from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge gave lectures and ran workshops on a number of undergraduate subjects that were designed to extend and stimulate students' intellectual experience. Students from schools and colleges in the area were invited to participate with Wyke students in this unique event which it is hoped will encourage them to apply to the most competitive universities.
Lucinda Rumsey, Tutor for Admissions and English tutor at Mansfield College Oxford has had a long association with Wyke since Mansfield College began coordination of the Further Education Access Initiative in 2000. Mansfield is now doing outreach and access work particularly focussed in and around Hull, as an area where success in applying to Oxford and Cambridge is low considering the number of well-qualified candidates in the region. The purpose of the programme is to encourage students from Wyke and other local schools and colleges to think about the subjects they might study at university and to give an insight into what university study is like. Oxford and Cambridge tutors often work closely on events because they are both looking for bright and engaged students, who are able to work independently and aspire to excel academically. Oxford and Cambridge admissions procedures and some of the courses are a little bit different, so the admissions talk outlined those difference and similarities.
