Wyke College street dancer Emma Smith wins £10,000 award

Emma Smith, who is studying for her A-levels at Wyke Sixth Form College, has won the Schwarzkopf national street dance competition. She learned the dance movements by watching videos of her favourite choreographers on the internet.

"I used to do contemporary dance classes but then I just started watching all the choreographers on YouTube and Sisco as well and just tried to copy it and get my own style." Emma entered the Schwarzkopf national street dance competition through the internet and, after just two auditions, was competing in the finals in London.

Wyke Students are Number One

A team of four A level mathematics students from Wyke Sixth Form College have beaten off all-comers in the region in the UK Mathematics Competition. Competing on Friday at Newland School the team of AS students Jade Wilson and Joe Foxon and A2 students Robert Rouse and James Morton beat all-comers from colleges and school sixth forms throughout the region. Runners up were Selby College.

Emma Challis Scoops Big Award in House of Lords Ceremony

A former Wyke College Computing student has been presented with a highly sought after Helena Kennedy Foundation award in a ceremony at the House of Lords. Emma Challis received her award from human rights lawyer and peer Baroness Helena Kennedy QC in recognition of her achievements in reaching higher education.

Wyke Debating Team

Never mind the three party leaders on television – formidable debating skills were shown at the final of the Norvic Debating Competition, which took place at the end of March in Wakefield. Having come through their heat in second place, Wyke’s team prepared a storming speech on the subject of, “That government governs best which governs not at all”, as well as engaging energetically and very skilfully in the topics from other colleges.
