  1. Sculpture Trip to Peter Coates Studio

    23 March 2012

Wyke Sixth Form College is commissioning Peter Coates stone mason and sculptor to carve one of his master pieces to be a permanent sculpture in the new entrance of Wyke Sixth Form College to celebrate the opening of the new build. As sculpture is a key discipline within A level Fine Art, it only seemed like an opportunity not to be missed. So the AS students took the Wyke College mini buses over to the Yorkshire Dales to visit Peter who was busy starting the commissioned piece.

Students were able to get an insight as to how a sculptor works and was able to ask questions and see other pieces of work he has created. On top of all this, students were also able to try their hand at stone masonry themselves.

  2. New York 2012

    19 March 2012

    New York 2012

A lucky group of twenty five students have just returned from an action packed trip to New York. Emma Philipson, Media Studies teacher, and Trevor Ryan, Head of Film Studies, organised five days of non-stop sight-seeing, ensuring an extremely full itinerary.

The coach transfer from JFK to our accommodation in Manhattan was possibly one the quietest coach transfers in Wyke College history, as the students spotted the Manhattan skyline and were awestruck by their surroundings. Following our arrival at the centrally located West Side YMCA, students began their stay in the Big Apple with an evening visit to Times Square, fine dining at the Hard Rock Café and a late night trip to the ‘top of the Rock’ to take in the bright lights of Manhattan from the top of the Rockefeller building.

  3. Wyke Love Paris in the Wintertime

    Wyke Students visit Paris

A group of 25 Business Studies and Accounting students have now returned from an extremely successful visit to Paris and Disneyland Paris.

The group arrived via coach and P&O North Sea Ferries, for a sight-seeing trip around Paris on Monday morning. Students were able to visit lots of famous places including the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.

The group stayed at the Explorers Hotel, just a short shuttle ride to the village and park. During our two days in Disneyland students investigated the marketing, finance and human resources of the parks. There was also time to enjoy the facilities on offer despite the severely cold weather - temperatures as low as a ‘real feel’ -16C!

On our return to the ferry we were able to visit Bruges and the many chocolate shops. We look forward to returning in the near future.

  4. Belgian Exchange 2011

    13 December 2011

    Belgium Exchange

The first leg of the Belgian exchange took place in November as we hosted eight students and two staff here at Wyke. They arrived exhausted after a disturbed night on the ferry but were allowed little respite as our students had planned plenty of activities for them in the evenings! Impressed by our college buildings, the students particularly enjoyed the canteen area and were treated to a meal on their first day in college.

They also took part in French lessons, where they paired up with our students and produced bi-lingual work on the environment and a critical review of a film. During their visit they also went to York and followed a paintings treasure hunt around Beverley.

    Germany Exchange 2011

The 13 Barntrup students who hosted Wyke College students in April, came as guests to enjoy a sunny week in Hull at the end of June. Together with their partners they enjoyed the scenic delights of Beverley, York and Whitby as well as Hull and the Humber Bridge. As well as sightseeing they enjoyed lunch in a church and three different evening barbecues, one with a Hawaiian theme.

They thoroughly enjoyed their stay, really appreciated sampling British family life and are all keen to come again. Some German students have already made plans to return for the 2012 Olympic Games and some Hull students are planning to return to Germany during the summer holidays.
