Sport - End of Season Review
18 August 2009
Wyke has continued to expand and improve their sports enrichment again this year. With an increase in teams and an increase in success.
Sports enrichment teams now consist of:
- Five Football teams, including our first ever Ladies football team
- Two Netball teams
- A Men’s Rugby team
- A Mixed Basketball team
All sports teams at Wyke competed in the British Colleges Leagues and Cups this year.
The Men’s Rugby team started the season strong this year and went from strength to strength, finishing top of the league and also reaching the North Eastern final of the BCS cup for the first time ever.
The Netball first team stormed through the season losing only one game to be clear winners of the league. They also reached the Semi-Finals of the BCS cup, were runners up in the under 19’s cup and came 3rd in the national schools regional rounds. The Netballers finished on a high and maintained their unbeaten run on the Isle of Man tour.
We also ran an Intra-Tutor League this year with teams competing in; Dodgeball, Volleyball, Basketball and Darts. The college is hoping to expand on these next year, increasing both the number of sports and participants.
Sports Leadership:
The college ran various primary link tournaments this year, which along with a leadership workshop, helped enhance the leadership and coaching skills of the students. Among these were a Yr 1 festival of sport involving the Wyke cluster schools; Appleton, Bricknell, Hall Road and Thorsby primaries. And a Tag rugby tournament for 10 teams across the St Mary’s Sports Partnership organises a Tag Rugby festival this year.
The PE department would like to thank all team Managers, Students and Senior Management who helped make this the successful season it was.
