Sport at Wyke
14 December 2009
The Sports Teams at Wyke are on a winning streak, particularly the Girls Netball Team who are adding to previous successes and have already won three trophies this year.
Both the Netball 1st and 2nd teams are top of the British College’s League. The Netball 1st team competed in a regional cup tournament against local rival teams such as Hymers, Hull College and Wilberforce. Having dominated every one of their games, they won the whole tournament and are now through to the national finals! The final will be against Gateshead College and if they win they will be the first team to represent Wyke at the National finals. One of the players, Danni Brettell, has reached the final round of the British College’s Netball trials. The trials were held at Telford College and she is still waiting to find out the result.
She is the first Wyke student we have had to reach this stage so we wish her all the best. The Football 1st Team is currently second in the British Colleges League and it is the first year that Wyke has had four male football teams competing. Inter-tutor dodgeball and volleyball competitions have again taken place and participation in sport in general is continuing to rise, with 25% of the College regularly taking part in some sport outside of their normal timetable.
The local community is continuing to benefit from the Sports Leadership Programmes run by the College, with links with local primary schools. And just for fun, the Sports staff at Wyke are currently growing beards in their ‘Tash for Cash’ campaign which will raise money for MacMillan Cancer.
