Despite fierce competition, Wyke Dance students invloved in the Hull Youth Dance Group have been selected to take part in Fresh 2012, the prestigious contemporary dance competition that showcases the finest youth dance groups from across the Yorkshire and Humber.

The students will be performing their piece ‘I phone. You Phone. We Phone', choreographed by ex-Wyke students, now artistic directors, John Beney and Gemma Barker that highlights societies obsession with mobile phones.

Hull Youth Dance explored a range of circumstances surrounding mobile phones and where are they sit in societies priorities. They include: “How often do we need to check for messages? How loudly do we need to speak to someone on the phone? Would an audience ignore a performance to use a mobile phone? Would performers ignore an audience while they duet with technology?

Ruth Drake, Arts Development Officer, Hull City Council said: ““We are really excited about being part of Fresh 2012. The performers are at a very high standard and the event provides such a great opportunity for young people to develop especially if they are looking for a career in dance.”

"It is a great opportunity for the young dancers in Hull to develop and a great opportunity to represent the city and the high standard of work that takes place in Hull."

Gemma Barker, Group Choreographer said; “Fresh 2012 is a breath-taking celebration of the achievements of our region’s young dancers. The very finest youth dance companies from across Yorkshire and the Humber will compete for an extraordinary prize in front of an elite panel of judges who will then select one group to represent Yorkshire at U.Dance England 2012, Youth Dance England’s flagship event taking place this July at the Southbank Centre in London.

“By the time our group compete they would have spent nearly 30 hours creating, refining and polishing their piece and we are very proud to have been selected by the panel of judges who are all dance professionals, it certainly adds weight to the fact we have a very talented group of dancers who are being recognised for their talents”.
