Never mind the three party leaders on television – formidable debating skills were shown at the final of the Norvic Debating Competition, which took place at the end of March in Wakefield. Having come through their heat in second place, Wyke’s team prepared a storming speech on the subject of, “That government governs best which governs not at all”, as well as engaging energetically and very skilfully in the topics from other colleges.

The overall standard was astonishingly high, and Wyke was placed fourth by a very small margin. As last year, the Wyke team t-shirts gave an extra sense of camaraderie, which was continued on the minibus journey home. The team, who had worked so hard on preparation for both the heat and the final, arrived back at Wyke knowing that they had blazed a purple trail of wit, wisdom and not a little passion across the West Riding.
