Foundation Diploma in Art & Design
Who is this course for?
Students who wish to study an Art & Design related discipline at degree level are recommended to complete a Foundation course. If you are currently studying Art related subjects at level 3 and have genuine passion, intellectual rigour and a desire to pursue a career route in an Art related area, this course will assist you in deciding upon an area of specialism and provide you with the quality of portfolio necessary to gain access to degree level study.
What are the entry criteria?
The creative and intellectual demands of this course will be considerable. A grade A or B in a visual art subject or a triple distinction at vocational level three will be required to access this course. Your application will need to be supported by the submission of a portfolio of both visual and written material.
The Art Department at Wyke Sixth Form College
The Fine Art studio forms part of a purpose built open plan teaching space offering access to drawing, painting and printmaking facilities. Access to digital equipment is also available. As part of initiation plans for this course, individual workstations are to be sited in a first floor studio annexe, affording each student a permanent space for planning and design activities.

Course Details
The course will be delivered as three distinct stages of study
Term 1. Stage One, Autumn
This initial stage of the course will offer opportunities to experience a wide range of creative disciplines and short projects offering opportunities to embrace aspects of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design/ illustration, ceramics/sculpture, textiles/fashion.
Term 2. Stage Two, Autumn/Winter
This stage of the course will require the negotiation of an independent programme of study developing individual strengths and interests; closely aligned to the development of this project will be a progression element concerned with UCAS application and portfolio development and presentation.
Term 3. Stage Three, Spring/Summer
Proposal, development and exhibition of a final project, representing the culmination of individual aspirations.
How the course is delivered
The course will be driven by direct creative activity typified by an independent and determined outlook supported by individual tutorial discussion and critical group activity. Individual specialist workshops will encourage advanced creative development. Reference to significant, historical artefacts and practice will shape individual creative development and an absolute level of critical rigour will be anticipated and applied to all areas of activity. Careful guidance will be given with regard to the construction and presentation of individual outcomes, statements and portfolios in pursuit of progression.
Departmental Enrichment
The department as a whole offers an open door policy, in order that space, materials and creative opportunities are maximised. Regular twilight studio sessions are held throughout the year and independent studio space will be available for private study for the duration of the course. Further individual support will be available on request and pastoral elements and issues will be handled by the Foundation team.
How to Apply?
Application is through the college online application form. Suitable candidates will be interviewed by a member of the Art and Design staff. A portfolio of art and design work is also required to demonstrate the students creative ability and potential.
