Student Support
Learning Mentors
Learning Mentors help students to manage their workload properly, offering help with such things as meeting deadlines while Learning Support Assistants offer subject specific support. For those in need of general academic help and for those with dyslexia laptops and Dictaphones can be provided as can a notetaker. There are signers and lipspeakers to assist the sensory impaired and for partially sighted students large print handouts and speech and magnification software are available. Wheelchair users or those with a specific medical need or other disability can access a lift key and an escort to and from lessons.
Student Feedback on Mentor Support
Manjinder Kaur, Single Year Student , 2010
Learning Mentors are a great, happy and helpful team. They provide anyone with good positive advice which will leave you full of confidence and have you dancing on your feet!
As a team they are open to talk about anything. So, if you want a cry, a laugh or positive feedback they have the power to bring that to you.
They always put a smile on your face!
Natalie Thrustle, AS Student, 2010
The learning mentors have always been there when I needed help. It doesn’t matter what the problem is they are always here to listen to personal problems or work related problems.
When I first joined Wyke I signed up to them. They have helped me with deadlines. They are also there when you need a friendly chat and are always happy to help.
Owen Hughes, A2 Level Student, 2010
The Mentor team offer a wide range of support for your studies, anything you need they will do their best to help you. If you need help with your work, or if you have any problems at home or college, just go in for a chat.
I received help from the mentors on several occasions. I first signed up for mentor support when I needed help with meeting coursework deadlines, they were there to help me get back on track and hand in my coursework on time. During my second year at Wyke the mentors helped me with my UCAS application for University.
Careers Advice
The college also has first class Careers provision. We recently appointed a fully qualified and trained Careers Officer who has spent a number of years supporting students in the East Riding when she was based at the Beverley Connexions office. There are regular careers talks from HE institutions and employers, a comprehensive HE programme for all first year students and a single year tutorial programme designed to encourage awareness of progression routes.
College Counsellor
With over 1000 students in the college it is inevitable that a few will occasionally find that things are not going well, so we have an experienced counsellor available to provide a confidential service.
The Guidance Centre
Students at Wyke are provided with a high level of support. Whether it’s a straightforward enquiry about travel to the college or a more complex personal issue, we have the staff here to help. The Guidance Centre is the first point of contact for all students; travel, exams, lost property and timetable issues are just some of the queries dealt with by our support staff. In a recent survey of our students the excellent help and advice provided by the Guidance Centre team featured as a regular comment.
