Level 3 Medical Science opens the door for you to access a broad range of science related careers, especially those biology related such as such as nursing, midwifery, biomedical sciences, physiotherapy, sport science, psychology and many others. If you are interested in science but find the emphasis on assessment by examinations does not allow you to show your full potential than this course could be for you.
UNIT 1: PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY, ANATOMY AND PATHOLOGY
This unit explores the biological principles that underpin medical science. Understanding how the human body works, in good and poor health, is key to learning how you can make a difference to others in the field of medical sciences. This unit studies how the human body functions at a cellular and tissue level, looking at various organ systems: nervous, endocrine musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and digestive systems. (Externally assessed examination.)
UNIT 2: HEALTH ISSUES AND SCIENTIFIC REPORTING
This unit develops understanding of medical science through learning about contemporary health issues, alongside developing knowledge about scientific analysis, evaluation and reporting. This unit explores a number of key areas in the field of medical science, with a focus on health issues faced by the human population today to explore their impact on the world we live in. You will gain an understanding of diagnostic techniques, before focusing on health issues themselves alongside associated initiatives including, cancer and various aspects of immune dysfunction, to the increasingly important world of genetics. You will learn how to research the impact of such health initiatives through developing knowledge in how to interpret and analyse different forms of scientific information, from newspaper articles to scientific journals. (Externally assessed examination.)
UNIT 3: PRACTICAL MICROBIOLOGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Through practical tasks on this unit, you will investigate the effect of antimicrobial agents on the growth of microorganisms, by selecting and applying knowledge of microorganisms and infectious diseases. An understanding of the nature of microorganisms will enable you to appreciate the various methods available to treat or cure diseases and to recognise the need to continue to develop new and innovative treatments. This will enable you to begin to understand the role of clinical
microbiologists and explore a variety of tests using good laboratory practice. (Internally assessed assignments.)
1 OPTIONAL UNIT: Unit 4 Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies, Unit 5 Biomedical Science or Unit 6 Human Reproduction and Fertility. (Internally assessed assignments.)
To help prepare yourself for this course, we recommend that you visit the Science department at one of our open days which run from October to January each year, or during our applicant information event in April. We also recommend that you attend taster sessions in Medical Science at our Wyke Start taster event in July. Summer work will also be available for you to complete following Wyke Start helping to prepare you for your first few weeks on the course.
Wyke Sixth Form College hold train to teach information events which offer you a great insight into this course. If you are interested in attending one of these events, please complete this form and we will be in contact with the key information.
Please note that the applications for this course can be submitted by following the ‘Apply Now’ button on this page. Applications are made through the University of Huddersfield rather than Wyke Sixth Form College. We look forward to meeting with you.

As part of this course, you will be offered several offsite visits. A recent example includes a trip to Biomedical Science Department at University of Hull where our students got the opportunity hear about cut of the edge research in the field, as well as take part in a Pathology workshop.
You will also have the opportunity to listen to a variety of guest speakers related to your learning. The department has strong links with Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and different specialist like Physiotherapy and Nutrition have shared career journey and job experience.
Lunchtime support sessions run throughout the year so that you can further develop exam technique or assignment portfolio.
