Green Flag Flying

<< Back to all news

Wyke  has once again earned the prestigious Eco Schools green flag—an achievement that reflects years of dedication, innovation, and community spirit.

To retain this award, Wyke tackled three key environmental themes: biodiversity, energy, and waste. The result? A transformed campus and a thriving sustainability culture that’s making waves far beyond the college gates.

Over the past three years, Wyke’s sustainability group—made up of staff from leadership, ICT, catering, premises, finance, teaching, and a passionate student body—has launched a series of impactful initiatives. These include:

  • 🌞 Installation of 358 solar panels
  • 💡 99.5% LED lighting across campus
  • 🖥️ Replacement of IT systems with energy-efficient units
  • 🌼 Bulb planting, tree planting, and wreath making
  • 🧹 Regular litter picks led by the Wyke Action Group

Geography teacher Kerry Thompson shared, “There has been a fantastic response from the students with currently 38 students in the Wyke Action Group. So far, we have been litter picking and bulb planting, wreath making and tree planting.”

Local residents have also voiced their appreciation. One commented, “I saw at least two groups of students from Wyke College out litter picking along Bricknell Avenue and Grammar School Road. Our meeting with Wyke helped to set this up. Thank you to the students—local residents are very grateful.”

Looking ahead, Wyke plans to deepen its eco efforts with Swift boxes, rewilding parts of the grounds, and creating a wildlife pond and well-being area. The Eco garden, funded by £2,000 won by former students and supported by the RSPB and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, will be a centrepiece of this vision.
