Wyke’s Sustainability Week brought together students, staff and community partners for a packed programme of activities designed to raise awareness of environmental issues, promote sustainable habits, and showcase the college’s ongoing commitment to positive climate action. Led by the Sustainability Team and the Wyke Eco Group, the week aimed to engage the entire college community in thinking critically about human impact on the environment and the powerful role individuals can play in creating change.
The celebrations began with the raising of the Sustainable Schools Green Flag, an award we proudly achieved last year and an important symbol of the college’s continuing progress.
In preparation for the week, Niamh created a series of Personal Development lessons exploring sustainability, encouraging students to reflect on their own behaviours and the global significance of environmental responsibility.
“During Eco Week, our Personal Development sessions have focused on building students’ understanding of sustainability and encouraging them to think creatively about positive environmental change. Students began by exploring what sustainability means, assessing how environmentally friendly we are as a college, and applying this knowledge through a range of hands on activities.
Our first-year students calculated their personal carbon footprints before working in teams to design campaigns that encourage others to reduce theirs. They produced eye catching posters, informative presentations, and impressive videos that highlight practical ways to live more sustainably and support the college’s eco goals.
Our second-year students took on the challenge of developing innovative sustainability proposals for the college. Their ideas ranged from biodiversity boosting garden spaces to efficiency improving motion sensor lighting. These projects showcased their creativity, problem solving skills, and growing expertise in green thinking”
Throughout the week the staff and students were asked to complete a sustainability questionnaire to help the sustainability group with the Climate Action Roadmap and make future sustainability developments. The questionnaire results are displayed at the end of the newsletter. In addition the College staff were asked to complete a transport survey which included how they travel to work.
The PE and Sports Department organised a collection of unwanted sports kit and gym clothing. We received a full bin of generous donations, some of which will be used as spare kit to support students during Monday and Wednesday enrichment sessions. The remaining items will be donated to the Turing trips, where they will be distributed to communities in South Africa and St Lucia.
We would like to thank everyone who donated. Your contributions not only support our students and partner communities abroad, but also promote sustainability by giving unused clothing a second life rather than letting it go to waste. Your generosity is making a real difference.
