No more years of hurt. Former Wyke student Jack Fox-Hockney is celebrating after helping the England Cerebral Palsy Football Team become world champions at the IFCPF Men's World Cup 2026.
The Para Lions were crowned champions after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over host nation USA in the final in Atlanta, Georgia. England's triumph capped an outstanding tournament in which the team went unbeaten, recording victories over Japan, Indonesia, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Brazil and finally the USA.
After a goalless first half in the final, the USA took the lead with just over half an hour remaining. England looked destined for defeat until Sam Dewhirst produced a crucial equaliser in injury time. The momentum swung firmly in England's favour and, in extra time, Porcher converted the winning goal to secure a memorable World Cup victory.
Jack, who played a key role throughout the tournament on the wing, described the achievement as a "crazy seven days" and spoke of the overwhelming support he had received from home.
Reflecting on the victory during an interview with local radio, Jack said, "It's been a crazy seven days and all the love from back home has been amazing. I just think it's great for para sport as well. If it inspires other people with cerebral palsy and shows them what can be achieved, then that's a really special thing."
England's road to the title included convincing group stage victories over Japan (5-0), Indonesia (2-0) and the Republic of Ireland, before hard-fought knockout victories against the Netherlands and Brazil.
Speaking about the team's success, Jack highlighted the determination shown by the squad throughout the competition. "We played America on their own patch and the odds were against us, but all the lads stuck together. We got the equaliser late on and then another goal in extra time. It went pretty crazy to be fair."
Jack's achievement is another inspiring example of former Wyke students excelling on the international stage. Becoming a World Cup winner is a remarkable accomplishment and everyone at Wyke congratulates Jack on his success.
We look forward to following the next chapter of hisinternational career and wish him every success as he continues to represent England on the world stage.
