This autumn, former Hull Trinity House Academy student Emperor-David Ikechukwu stood in the House of Commons for the UK Youth Parliament’s annual debate — his second time this year.
More than 300 young representatives came together to discuss key issues like housing, health, employment, crime, and sustainability, and to mark 80 years since the end of WWII.
Emperor-David, who studies Politics, Sociology, and English Language, reflected on his experience in a LinkedIn post. “Moments like this still feel surreal. I haven’t even been in the UK for four years, and I’m a young Black person from Hull standing in one of the most powerful rooms in the country — a place people who look like me weren’t always welcomed in.
Every time I’m in that chamber, I think about how far I’ve come and how many young people feel like politics isn’t ‘for them.’ I want them to see that their voice matters just as much as anyone else’s. If I can stand there and speak, they can too.”
Principal Julie Peaks added: “It’s fantastic to see Emperor-David contributing to such an inspiring debate at Westminster. His energy and confidence are a true asset to Wyke and a real credit to Hull.”
