Extended Certificate: 50% Coursework, 50% Exams

The BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Science requires you to achieve at least the minimum entry requirements for your chosen pathway plus a grade 5 or higher in GCSE Maths and a grade 5 or higher in GCSE Science.
BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate (1 A Level Equivalent)
Level 3 Applied Science opens the door for you to access a broad range of science related careers. This qualification will allow you to progress into many science related degree subjects at university, such as nursing, midwifery, biomedical sciences, physiotherapy, radiology and many others. If you are interested in science but find the emphasis on assessment by examinations does not allow you to show your full potential than this course could be for you.
The Applied Science course will allow you to study how science is applied in many different types of professions and industries. The focus of the course is scientific usage, concentrating on how scientists and others use science in their work.
1 A Level Equivalent
Your teaching will take place in a specialist laboratory that is equipped to the highest standards. In addition, there are dedicated computer rooms for you to complete coursework and an open access computer area adjacent to the laboratories.
This 2 year course is split into 5 units. There are three compulsory examined units and a compulsory coursework unit.
Compulsory Units:
Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Biology
This Unit explores the key components of biological science. The topic areas covered in this unit include:
-Animal and plant cells and tissues, including specialised cells
-Biological molecules, including water, carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acid.
-Cell transport.
-Enzymes activity.
This compulsory unit is externally assessed by a Pearson-set and marked examination.
Unit 2: Principles and Applications of Chemistry
This Unit explores some fundamental concepts which underpin the chemistry and chemical reactions of the world around them. Topic areas covered:
-Atomic and electronic structure.
-Bonding and structure.
-Periodicity.
-Physical Chemistry.
-Organic Chemistry.
This compulsory unit is externally assessed by a Pearson-set and marked examination.
Unit 3: Principles and Applications of Physics
This Unit explores the use of practical and mathematical skills in the study of waves, motion and electricity. Main content areas are:
-Understanding waves and optical fibres.
-Forces in transportation and Newtons Laws of Motion.
-Electrical circuits and the transfer of energy.
This compulsory unit is externally assessed by a Pearson-set and marked examination.
Unit 4: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
In this unit you will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, including chromatography, colorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the scientific laboratory environments.
This compulsory unit is internally assessed with assignment-based work.
Unit 5: Science Investigation Skills
In this unit you will gain an understanding and the skills required to undertake an investigative project by:
-Undertaking a literature search and review to produce an investigative project proposal.
-Produce a plan for an investigative project based proposal.
-Safely undertake the project, collecting, analysing and presenting results.
-Present the conclusions from the project using correct scientific principles.
This optional unit is internally assessed with assignment-based work.
To help prepare yourself for this course, we recommend that you visit the Applied Science department at one of our open days which run from October to January each year. We also recommend that you attend taster sessions in Applied Science at our Wyke Start taster event in July. Summer work will also be available for you to complete following Wyke Start helping to prepare you for your first few weeks on the course.
Wyke Sixth Form College hold train to teach information events which offer you a great insight into this course. If you are interested in attending one of these events, please complete this form and we will be in contact with the key information.
Please note that the applications for this course can be submitted by following the ‘Apply Now’ button on this page. Applications are made through the University of Huddersfield rather than Wyke Sixth Form College. We look forward to meeting with you.

Applied Science can lead to a wide variety of careers and higher education courses such as Biomedical Science, Sports Therapy, Forensic Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Paramedic Science, Nursing and more.
At Wyke Start, our 2-day taster event in July, each of your subjects will set you some work to complete to help prepare you for the course. The work is available to download on https://www.wyke.ac.uk/wyke-start-summer-work

As part of this course, you will be offered several offsite visits. A recent example includes a trip to Atom pub in Beverley where our students got the opportunity to experience the role of crime scene investigation at a mocked-up incident. Wearing hazmat suits, latex gloves, visors and face-coverings, students spent the morning collecting trace evidence and recording findings. This included samples of hair and blood as well as gathering photographic evidence of footprints and fingerprint data. All their findings were then brought back to the College laboratories to analyse and identify the suspect.
You will also have the opportunity to listen to a variety of guest speakers related to your learning. The department has strong links with The University of Hull and often used their specialist facilities to extend lab work. Lunchtime support sessions run throughout the year so that you can further develop exam technique or assignment portfolio.
