This is a post-A Level or Level 3 course for students who have studied art and design at sixth form or college. You will need to have achieved at least a grade C in an Art based subject at Level 3 to access this course. The submission of a portfolio can also be accepted to support your application to this course. If you have not had the opportunity to study art and design at Level 3, please speak with a member of the Art Department team.
Foundation Diploma
This course is for students who wish to study an Art and Design related discipline at degree level, as it is recommended to complete a Foundation course.
If you are currently studying Art related subjects at Level 3 and have genuine passion, intellectual rigour and a desire to pursue a career route in an art and design related area, this course will assist you in deciding upon an area of specialism and provide you with the quality of portfolio necessary to gain access to degree level study.
The course demands a strong work ethic and independent commitment. If you achieved well and enjoyed A Level or Level 3 art & design in sixth form or college this could be the course for you.
The Foundation Diploma is part of the creative community at Wyke with includes a broad portfolio of A Levels and Level 3 courses.
The Art & Design studio forms part of a purpose- built teaching space offering access to drawing painting and printmaking facilities. Access to digital equipment is also available. A wider range of visual and contextual materials are made freely available, many designed by the teaching team.
The course will be delivered as three distinct stages of study.
This initial stage of the course will offer opportunities to experience a wide range of creative disciplines and short projects offering opportunities to embrace aspects of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design/illustration, ceramics/sculpture, and textiles/fashion.
This stage of the course will require the negotiation of an independent programme of study developing individual strengths and interests; closely aligned to the development of this project will be a progression element concerned with UCAS application and portfolio development and presentation.
Proposal, development and exhibition of a final project, representing the culmination of individual aspirations.
The course will be driven by direct creative activity typified by an independent and determined outlook supported by individual tutorial discussion and critical group activity. Individual specialist workshops will encourage advanced creative development. Reference to significant, historical artefacts and practice will shape individual creative development and an absolute level of critical rigour will be anticipated and applied to all areas of activity. Careful guidance will be given with regard to the construction and presentation of individual outcomes, statements and portfolios in pursuit of progression.
This course is creatively demanding and requires an open minded and industrious approach. The best preparation for this course is direct observation drawing undertaken on an almost daily basis, studying at length and in detail the qualities of everyday objects, architecture and figurative subjects. Gather your work into a portfolio to demonstrate your creative ability. Taking an active interest in the history of the subject is also recommended. Both the Ferens Art Gallery and Beverley Art Gallery offer splendid opportunities to view paintings and artefacts at first hand.

The Foundation Diploma in Art & Design is designed to help students progress onto competitive degree courses or a chosen employment route.
At Wyke Start, our 2-day taster event in July, each of your subjects will set you some work to complete to help prepare you for the course. The work for this course will be available on this page to complete following this event.

The department as a whole offers an open-door policy, in order that space, materials and creative opportunities are maximized. Regular twilight studio sessions are held throughout the year. Throughout the year, the course visits working studios, art exhibitions and galleries.
